〈Illustration of an Outdoor Teahouse〉
The subtitle is "Illustration of an Outdoor Teahouse" (Dejaya-no-zu). While there are many types of "teahouses," you can think of them as the "cafes" of the Edo period. An "outdoor teahouse" (dejaya) was an even simpler version—essentially an outdoor coffee stand.
Since the distance between post stations was many miles long, travelers would stop at these stands to take a quick break as needed. The woman you see here tending to the fire is the proprietress. One of the palanquin bearers is lighting his pipe, while the other—poor thing—seems too exhausted to even think about drinking tea; he’s slumped right down in the palanquin. It’s as if the palanquin has "overheated" just like a modern car!
Meanwhile, the passenger looks perfectly composed, probably because he’s the least tired of them all. I personally think it would be nice if they swapped places for a bit—let the passenger carry the pole and give that exhausted bearer a ride to the next stop—but I suppose things don't work that way.
Now, it's time for a quick review. Do you remember what that pole standing behind the tree (the one with the kettle hanging from it) is called, and what role it played? (Hint: See the "Hiratsuka" section).

〈Illustration of the Tenryu River〉
For the subject of Mitsuke Station, I have chosen the ferry crossing at the Tenryu River, just outside the town. Looking at the water in both the foreground and background, you might find yourself a bit confused as to what’s going on.
You see, the lower reaches of the Tenryu River feature a massive sandbar (an island in the river) that splits the flow in two. Therefore, the system required travelers to take an initial ferry to the sandbar, then transfer to another ferry to reach the opposite bank.
The passengers departing the sandbar by boat are all dressed in the same uniform, so they are likely part of a daimyo’s (feudal lord’s) retinue. Back on the sandbar, perhaps the last remaining accountant of the group is haggling over the final price with the ferry attendant.
Naturally, when such "big-ticket" clients arrive, individual travelers end up ignored and left behind—a dynamic that probably hasn't changed much in human society, has it? Consequently, the parent and child in the center of the scene look quite pitiable, stranded and bored on the sandbar. The child is poking around in the water with a stick... I wonder if they’ve "found" (Mitsuke-tan) anything interesting?

〈Illustration of Winter Desolation〉
The subtitle is "Illustration of Winter Desolation" (Fuyugare-no-zu). It seems a local cat warming itself by a bonfire has been joined by a pair of palanquin bearers and their passenger.
I once heard a proverb from an American cat: "The cat who chops his own firewood warms himself twice—once while chopping it, and once while burning it." Since the bearers have been getting plenty of exercise, they probably aren't as cold as the others. The coldest one must be the passenger, who has been sitting perfectly still inside the palanquin. Yet, perhaps his social status gets in the way; even though he's freezing, I get the impression this fellow in the yellow raincoat is hesitating to join the circle around the fire.
The most hardworking one is the young female cat tending the fire and gathering fallen leaves with her rake. The cutest is the kitten riding on her back. And the most "shameless" is that fellow exposing his bare backside to dry his tail! Thanks to him, the early winter atmosphere—where one might almost expect to hear the elegant sound of a piano drifting from nearby Hamamatsu Castle—is completely ruined.
I suppose you could call this a case of "utter-butt-er confusion" (Shiri-metsuretsu)—a true "dis-as-stern" for the scenery!

〈Illustration of the Ferry Crossing〉
The ferry crossing you take before arriving at Arai Station is quite different from the ones we’ve seen so far; it’s a serious voyage across about four kilometers of Lake Hamana and the open sea. However, despite being "the sea," it’s apparently shallow enough for the boatmen to push the vessels forward using long poles.
The sailing ship up ahead, adorned with family crest banners and the distinctive feathered pole (remember Shinagawa?), clearly belongs to a daimyo’s (feudal lord's) procession. Following behind in a smaller boat are the chugen (low-ranking attendants). The two at the front have already hung their heads and drifted off to sleep. You can't doze off while walking, but I suppose the moment you sit down in a boat, the urge to nap becomes irresistible. I just hope they wake up when they reach the far shore—it would be a disaster if they slept through the landing and woke up back where they started!
In the foreground, two others are facing each other, staring intently at something. One has his head in his hands, deep in thought; they’re likely absorbed in a game of Shogi or Go. Across from them, another cat is letting out a massive yawn. This is one of those classic moves we cats do—licking our backs or having a good stretch—but of course, doing such a thing during a formal daimyo procession might get you exiled to a remote island! I suppose this boat ride is his one chance to let loose.
Still, one can’t help but wonder about this group's dinner plans. Will they get to feast on a traditional Kabayaki (grilled eel) banquet tonight? Or will they simply be handed a single "eel-flavored pie" (Unagi Pie) and told that’s all for the evening? It’s a very pressing concern indeed!

〈Sarugababa〉
If I could, I’d start by describing Futagawa as a place of stunning natural beauty with two rivers, just as its name suggests... but reality was quite the opposite. Imagine you had to illustrate a bleak, desolate stretch of land with no famous shrines or temples—just a few scrubby pine trees starting to sprout. What would you do?
I was at my wits' end, but fortunately, there was a famous teahouse here that served Matatabi-mochi (silvervine rice cakes). So, I placed the shop on the left and brightened up the foreground with a trio of ladies—a shamisen string ensemble—making their way there. In those days, if you wanted to hear music, live performance was your only option, so these traveling musicians who moved from station to station were incredibly precious.
As for the Matatabi-mochi wrapped in oak leaves (Kashiwa), it wasn’t exactly a unique local specialty—you could find it anywhere in the country—but this particular teahouse happened to make it their star attraction. Still, it makes me wonder... is there actually anyone out there who eats the oak leaf along with the rice cake? I don’t think anyone does, so why on earth do they bother wrapping it in the first place?

〈Female Traveling Cats at the Inn〉
As the subtitle "Female Traveling Cats at the Inn" (Tabineko Tome-mesu) suggests, this scene captures a comical moment at Goyu Station during twilight. I chose to render the townscape of Goyu in monotone to represent the evening, which allows the action in the foreground to really pop.
I painted a similar soliciting scene for "Kanagawa," but here, I’ve focused more on the "Tome-mesu" (hostess cats) and their aggressive tactics. If an inn still has vacant rooms as dusk falls, it becomes a matter of life and death to pull in customers—even by force!
Now, if the solicitor were a real beauty—say, an American Shorthair or a Bengal—it might be a different story. But when it’s a plump, ordinary tabby of a landlady like the one here, you can hardly blame the traveling cat for resisting so desperately! To the right, a younger cat dressed like a hostess looks a bit taken aback by this minor act of street violence.
Meanwhile, peering out from the window of the inn on the right, a calico "Tome-mesu" who has already filled her rooms relaxes and watches the skirmish in the street with amusement. Inside the lobby, the lucky cat who secured the last room is about to wash his travel-worn paws in a basin of water brought by an elderly female cat. It’s just another typical evening at a post station.

〈Illustration of the Boundary Post〉
This procession entering Fujikawa Station in Okazaki, Aichi, is not a daimyo’s retinue—notice there are no feathered poles at the front! As you can guess from the ceremonial ribbons (Gohei) tied like gift bows on the two dogs, this is an official mission for the "Presentation of Shogun's Dogs" (Oinu-kenjo) from the Shogunate to the Imperial Court in Kyoto.
The wooden boundary post (Bojikui) marks the entrance to Fujikawa. Bowing there to welcome the party are the station manager (on the right) and likely the master of the Wakihonjin (secondary inn) in the center. It’s quite funny to see the manager’s look of embarrassment as he glares at his inexperienced young apprentice, who has dared to lift his head to peek at the dogs. "Hey! Keep your head down, you fool!" his eyes seem to scream.
By the way, next to the boundary post stand several official notice boards of the Shogunate. The center board reads: "Burnable garbage on Tuesdays, raw waste on Thursdays—must be put out in Shogunate-designated bags." (Yes, cats adopted the solar calendar much earlier than humans!) The board on the left is a warning: "Do not tear open and eat the contents of the raw waste bags."

〈The Famous Arimatsu Tie-Dye〉
The color of my fur has faded away in vain,
As my tail grows short in this world,
While gazing at the long rains—and my long-lost beauty. > —
Nekono Komachi
(My fur has lost its luster, and my tail has grown short while the long rains fell. My beauty, too, has faded while I was lost in vain and idle thoughts.)
I’ve opened this commentary with this poem by Nekono Komachi because every female cat—even those who aren't world-class beauties like her—is concerned about her appearance. And there is no better place than Narumi for such ladies to refresh their spirits by purchasing a kimono with a brand-new tie-dyed pattern.
The village of Arimatsu, located about four kilometers before you enter Narumi Station, is the famous production center for "Arimatsu Shibori" (tie-dye). The roadside from here is lined with many shops selling tie-dyed kimonos and fabrics. It is no coincidence that the four traveling cats depicted in this print are all female.
However, shopping for a kimono can sometimes be a massive headache. Even if you find the perfect pattern featuring mice or fish, you often discover that the hole for the tail is in completely the wrong place!

〈The Mie River〉
Depicted here are the Mie River (known today as the Mitaki River) and the Mitaki Bridge that spans it. In reality, the Mitaki River isn't quite as small as this picture suggests, and the bridge itself is much longer. However, its structure was indeed as simple as you see here—a basic affair without even a handrail.
I suppose I might receive a formal complaint from the local Chamber of Commerce or the Tourism Bureau for making it look like Yokkaichi is perpetually wind-blown. But you see, I had already assigned Oiso to handle the rain, Mishima to take care of the fog, and Kanbara to look after the snow—so I simply had to ask Yokkaichi to be in charge of the wind!
The young lad on the left clearly failed to tie his sedge hat (sugegasa) properly; a sudden gust has sent it flying, and he’s scrambling after it in a panic. The real "secret sauce" (miso) of this composition is the hat's position at the very edge of the frame. Did it land in the water behind the embankment? Or on this side? Did it snag on a branch, or perhaps some kind soul caught it? I leave that entirely to the imagination of the viewing cat.
In any case, this fellow is lucky to have been born in the old days—at least he doesn't have to worry about his hat flying into a main road and being flattened by a dump truck!

〈Sudden Summer Rain〉
I believe the equation "A female cat's heart and the autumn sky are both ever-changing" remains an unshakeable truth, no matter the era. As for the former, I certainly had my fair share of bitter experiences in my younger days. Compared to that, a sudden change in the weather is really no big deal.
Here, I’ve depicted six cats hurrying through a sudden downpour. Unless you're made of sugar and liable to melt, I don't see what the fuss is about—so what if your kimono gets a little damp? Once you’re completely soaked, you can’t get any wetter, so there's really no need to wrap yourself in straw, hunch your shoulders in a rush, or scramble to cover a palanquin with a raincoat just to hold back the inevitable.
In fact, it’s that very struggle that makes the rain enjoy teasing you! You should just embrace it—look up at the sky with a happy face and think, "Ah, what a lovely rain this is," as you stroll along with quiet dignity. I guarantee you, the rain would be so startled that it would stop on the spot!

〈Early Departure from the Honjin〉
As the subtitle suggests, this scene depicts a daimyo's retinue preparing for an "Early Departure" (Hayadachi) from their Honjin. For those who don't know, a Honjin was the residence of a powerful local cat designated as the daimyo’s official lodging; it wasn't a commercial business like the ordinary inns (Hatago) where common cats stayed. While the owners did receive a "thank-you gift" in return, it rarely covered their actual expenses. So, while it was a great honor, I suspect it was also something of a "welcome nuisance."
One can't help but wonder how on earth they squeezed dozens—or even over a hundred—cats into a single house! Even if the lord was given a private room, the rest surely just lined up their futons in the grand hall. I can only imagine the chaos once they finished their day's travel and had their fill of kibble: cats pouncing on each other, scratching matches, sharpening claws on every available surface, and having pillow fights!
And yet, when it comes time for the formal procession, they put on their most dignified faces and stroll along grandly, shouting "Down! Down on your knees!" I'm surely not the only one who thinks they're more trouble than a group of middle schoolers on a field trip.

〈Fudesute-mine (Brush-Discarding Ridge)〉
A short distance after leaving Seki Station, you’ll come upon this mountain, Fudesute-yama. As you can see, the craggy rock faces create a truly unique and striking landscape. The name "Fudesute" (Brush-Discarding) supposedly comes from an incident involving the Muromachi-period painter Kano Motonobu (later known as Ko-hogen Motonobu). Legend has it he was so overwhelmed by the scenery that he couldn't capture it on paper and threw his brush away in frustration. It sounds like a dramatic story, but if you ask me, you shouldn't go blaming your tools just because you couldn't paint the picture!
Regardless, it’s a wonderful thing that traveling cats can relax at this teahouse and enjoy such a view. You’ll notice there are no railings along the edge of the cliff where they’re gazing out. This is because every cat understands the concept of "personal responsibility." If you want to go right to the edge, you take that risk upon yourself.
In my opinion, this is one of the best parts of cat society. If we ever become a world where cats put themselves in danger, get hurt, and then shift the blame onto others by crying, "It's your fault for not putting up a fence!"—well, that’ll be the end of us.

〈The Famous Dried Gourd Strips〉
For the scene at Minakuchi Station, I’ve chosen to depict the production of the local specialty: Kanpyo (dried gourd strips).
A cat who appears to be the mother skillfully slices the fruit of the bottle gourd—sometimes called fukube—into long, thin ribbons on a cutting board. One daughter busily hangs these strips over nearby fences and ropes to dry, while another daughter brings fresh gourds from the field to restock the supply. And once again, the baby on the daughter's back is just precious!
A male cat passes by, seemingly ignoring the whole scene. Perhaps he’s seen it so often at his own home that he’s bored of it, or maybe he’s just blissfully indifferent to everything around him—there's no way for us to know.
What? You didn't know Kanpyo is popular with cats? Oh, it’s a huge hit! Many cats buy it as a souvenir. You’re wondering what kind of dishes we use it for? Well, to be honest, I didn't even know it was edible, and I don't think many cats try to eat it. But if you soak it in water to make it soft and then tie it to the end of a stick and wiggle it around, it looks just like a snake! The grandkids absolutely love it.

〈The Hashirii Teahouse〉
For the scene of Otsu, I’ve chosen the Hashirii Teahouse—or as you might call it today, "Family Restaurant Hashirii." The name comes from the natural spring water known as Hashirii located right in front of the shop.
This spring was incredibly convenient for the restaurant, the customers, the traveling cats, and even the fishmonger you see here who needs to refresh his water. It’s essentially like having a 24-hour faucet that you never have to turn off!
A rice dealer has arrived at the restaurant to make a delivery. When it comes to hauling such heavy loads, a "Bull" (ox) seems to be the best choice—it lacks speed, but it’s got plenty of power. Now, I don't know if a thing called a "refrigerator" will ever be invented in the future, but since we don't have anything like that, whatever is made that day must be sold that day; nothing can be carried over to the next.
However, no cat would ever be so petty as to take advantage of that situation by intentionally showing up right before closing time, hoping to snag a 40% discount! I can't say the same for humans, though.

〈The Sanjo Ohashi Bridge〉
At long last, we have arrived in Kyoto. Reaching our final destination, the Sanjo Ohashi Bridge, I’m sure both the traveling cats and those of you who have followed these illustrations from the beginning feel a sense of relief. As the one who painted and narrated this journey, I feel exactly the same.
As noted on the print, this is officially the "End of the Tail" (Taibi) for our Thirty-Three Stations of the Cat-kaido! For us cats, what more perfect word could there be than Taibi—which means both "The End" and "A Grand Tail"—to mark this final scene?
You may see the city labeled as "Keishi," but that isn't a mistake; it simply refers to the "Imperial Capital of the Cat Emperor." If you look back at the illustration of Nihonbashi in Edo, you can feel the energy of a political and commercial hub. But here in Kyoto, one look at the colorful kimonos of the passing cats tells you immediately that this is the heart of high fashion and culture.
Amidst the bustling crowd hurrying across the bridge, those cats leaning over the railing look rather pitiable—yet comical—perhaps suffering from a bit of a hangover? Or maybe they are just exceptionally curious and can’t take their eyes off the fish in the Kamo River. I shall leave that judgment to you, the viewer, looking at this picture from a world 150 years in the future.
